Depends on model.
The
lspci
can tell you what chipset is recognized.

My modem is a SM56 PCI Speakerphone Modem from Motorola

Well, a few month ago, I visted http://www.linmodems.org and use the
"detector" available and here is what it found:

Anyway, I'm trying to convince my wife to buy ADSL so... maybe in a few
days or week, this problem was an old one !

I'm using a old AMD K6-2 at 350Mhz with 156Mo. Do you think it will be
enough for this version ?

My old AMD K6-2 500 MHz and 256 MB runs fine considering CPU speed, anyway
it is better than with 9.3. It is almost sure that you need to keep your
swap partition, as installation of 10.2 requires more RAM than 156 MB,
later it works with lesser. The lowest RAM and CPU I have tried with
version 10.1 is described in:
http://en.opensuse.org/MiniSUSE_-_Test_openSUSE_on_Minimal_Hardware
and 10.2 is IMHO better than 10.1.

tnx for the link. Sure, a better computer will be...better
Well, I guess what I will ask to Santa ;oD

In Linux there is almost endless number of ways to install it and update.
http://en.opensuse.org/Portal/OpenSUSE_Installation
I haven't updated the page recently, but articles that you can find will
give you some idea, what is possible.

tnx again for this link. I'm going to check it.

Anyway, I will look in the log you suggest and will see if I find
something.

There are other methods to check hard disk like program badblocks:
http://www.oreillynet.com/linux/cmd/cmd.csp?path=b/badblocks
or console command
man badblocks
for instance
badblocks -n <your linux partition>
but badblocks require that tested device is not mounted, which is not
possible from running Linux. I would not use
badblocks -nf <your linux partition>
which will force test on running system, as that can bring even more
trouble.

tnx for the tips.
this week, I've made a test. I configure KDE to not show the icon from
the desktop and using this option, I didn't get this error message about
file protocol. So, for me, the problem is more from KDE than my
computer, isn't ?
If it shows up that hard disk is failing, it will be good to consider new
computer. I'm not much of consumer and I buy new when old gets overrun with
a time or fails, but today cheap computer can be really good experience
after AMD K6-2 at 350Mhz.

Yep, sure, no need of a mega-super computer and if right now, I really
enjoy this new world with SuSe..waou.. what will it be if I've a better
computer, ADSL and more !

Thank you so much for your answer.
I wish you a nicely sunday.
