openSUSE 10.2 was giving me intermittent sound problems until recently.
Maybe the updates fixed my problem and created yours.

Anyway, when the sound cut out logged in as root and typed: 'rcalsasound
stop'. After next typing 'rcalsasound start' I heard the speakers click
and my sound returned.
