I had it working once with opensuse 10.1 so i know my hardware is OK.

I also didn't install gnome and it's working fine with kde. you will
install several gnome libraries anyway because many applications need gtk2
etc.

Are you using KDM as display manager?
I know i don't need gnome as a desktop to run beryl, i need to know if i
need GDM to have this command "gnome-xgl-switch --enable-xgl" have any
effect.
