At least I can download manually at this point and get advice here. I
don't use anything like smart or apt-get so I'm contemplating
downloading/installing one of these if it is necessary.

Any useful suggestions would be appreciated.

Well I've decided to take the plunge and I installed Apt. I'm now
uninstalling several proggies to clean up dependency issues. After this I
should have a functioning Yast and then I can re-install numerous
packages..
