That shows the IDE device is listed under an SCSI/SATA device ID. While
I'd expect this with 10.3alpha and 10.3beta, I wouldn't have expected it
with 10.2.

/dev/sr0 DVD

Same for this, unless it is an SCSI/SATA DVD drive. It should have a
/dev/hdx device ID.

I've installed a minimal Text system on the PATA drive and set it up as the
secondary boot (after the DVD) and I'm getting

GRUB Loading stage1.5
GRUB Loading, Please wait ...
Error 17

Okay, that means the file system that is home to /boot is unrecognised.
Can you post a copy of the /boot/grub/menu.lst , /boot/grub/device.map
and /etc/fstab ? You'll probably need to boot into the rescue system to
do so, or maybe use one of the many available Live CDs.

This build was supposed to be fairly straight-forward but I've now been at
it most of the day

I hate it when things don't go smoothly. Then again, it would be damn
boring if everything went as planned.

and I'm slowly going crazy.
