Update problem - gcc 4.1.2

I've just updated using Smart. Among the updates was kernel
2.6.16.53-0.8-smp (I'm running a Dell Precision 690 with Xeon 5140).
Trying to reinstall my Nvidia driver gives SIGSEGV and VMware tells me
that the kernel was compiled using gcc 4.1.2 but version 4.1.0 is
installed on my system. Smart tells me that 'gcc-4.1.2' corresponds to
no package. I'm stymied. Please help.
