The shock made me forgetful, sorry!
I should have stated that I'm running SuSE 10.1 32-bit with KDE 3.5.1
level "a".
VMware has reconfigured OK after warning that it might crash if I used a
different version of gcc from that used in the kernel - it seems to run
OK, however.
SAX1 has reverted to the nv driver, which at least gives me graphics of
a sort.
I can't find anything about gcc 4.1.2 (which was released in February,
apparently) in connexion with SuSE 10.1.
