How to run "Online Update" faster?

Back when I was using Suse 9.3 the "Online Update" feature in Yast was
quite fast: It took it but a few seconds to look up if there were any
updates and then show them.
With Suse 10.2 it takes *forever*. In particular the "Refresh udpate
sources" step takes a very long time because it redownloads those huge
xml files from all the repositories each single time, after which it
parses them from the local disk, also taking quite some time. It's a
real pain to wait for it each time.
The worst thing is that the "Software management" program of Yast does
the same: It downloads those huge xml files each single time it's
started, unlike in Suse 9.3 where it started almost instantly every time.
Yes, I know that I can turn off the updating of those repository
sources in the "Installation source" program, but doesn't that more or
less defeat the purpose of having it check if there are any new updates
available?
Is there anything that can be done to speed this up? Why was the
updater in Suse 9.3 so much faster? Can't this whole process be done in
a better way? I don't know, perhaps for each new update put a new file
in the repository or something, so that Yast can download only the newer
ones and not the entire gigantic xml file each time?
.
