SATA Install

I have some books that include an older version of Linux - vers 9.x I
believe.

I have partitioned a SATA hdd to leave 100 GB's available for Linux. I
have not formatted this partition as I know Linux will only
repartition for root and swap drives.

The installer program cannot recognize the SATA hdd and perform the
installation>

The system is a 3.4GHz DualCore Intel with 2GB's of RAM and SATA-HDD.

Suggestions???
