10.3 system does not shut down

I cannot shut down from openSUSE 10.3 - whether from the KDE logout menu,
from Konsole with shutdown -h now, or halt, or from a text terminal at init
3.
It echoes the TERM & KILL signals, warns me the system is going to shut
down, appears to stop for around 2 seconds (fans, LEDs off) then reboots.
(Reboot/Restart the computer works normally.)

10.2 used to shut down fine - there have been no hardware changes since
installing 10.3, - and a copy of Sabayon 3.4 (kernel 2.6.22-sabayon) on a
different partition of the same drive shuts down & reboots fine.

Google searches return info on problems with various laptop brands, and
various suggestions that it may be something to do with the SATA drive -
though a lot of these are old posts - and as I said, the same kit shut down
fine under 10.2. I can't see that SUSE would have introduced a bug into
10.3 that wasn't there before, but which does not affect a majority of
users - this clearly isn't the case, or more people would be complaining!
It must be me/my kit.

I'd be grateful for some pointers as to where to look for a solution to
this:
