Re: SuSE specific howto instruction for spamassassin

The carbonbased lifeform Andreas Meile inspired alt.os.linux.suse with:
Dear openSuSE users

I'm planning to migrate a mail server (SMTP server running with fixed IP
address as a DNS MX record target) to the current openSuSE 10.3 version. In
the same time I'd like to implement some spam countermeasures due receiving
a lot of spam in the past.

Already done from my side: I was able to install a test server from the DVD
version with selecting the "sendmail" and "spamassassin" packages inside
YaST, and all YOU updates are also installed. Sendmail itself is running as
expected exept spam filtering, i.e. all needed /etc/sysconfig/mail and
/etc/sysconfig/sendmail options are set. I also was able to set "Start
spamd" inside YaST's runlevel editor. Compared to the "use Amavis" checkbox
when configuring sendmail inside YaST, I cannot find an equivalent option
for spamassassin.

But using amavisd-new as frontend for SA is the way to go.

So I need some help from you how to complete the Spamassassin configuration
in such an environment, i.e. a simple "Howto" because there are no such
hints in /usr/share/doc/packages/spamassassin/README.SuSE . Goal: sendmail
should query spamd on every mail an then produce either a "250 Message
accepted" or "550 Rejected (Score ...)" answer to the peer SMTP server
depending of the content and mail sending IP address.

See /usr/share/doc/packages/amavisd-new/README_FILES/README.sendmail

Additional question: Is it better to change to Postfix instead Sendmail
because of better YaST support?

And because Postfix's configuration files are readable, as opposed to
sendmail's .mc (or even .m4) file.
Unless you care for aa very complicated enterprise mail cofiguration,
there is no reason to opt for Sendmail, all but a few very niche
situations can be dealt with by Postfix easier and faster.
