AFAIK, the PS3 does not use Linux (PS 2 did). But you can install Linux
on it. When you do, you have access to 6 SPEs (not 7). The 7th runs a
hypervisor in order to spy on what you do with Linux (DRM ahoy!) and
bark/block you if you do something Sony doesn't approve of. The 8th SPE
is *always* disabled on the PS3 so that Sony can still use a chip even
if it has a defective core.
It definitely DOES use Linux. It is just that some choose to change the
distribution.
