Also, on openSUSE servers I administer, I never use automatic updates
because I really feel that's something I need to watch over.
But if the problem have been a automatic update and the kernel has been
upgraded, the system only needs to be rebooted to load the new kernel and
modules (however there is a feature which makes it possible to switch the
running kernel). Especially if the new kernel has (partly) overwritten the
running one.
Automatic updates are not to be recommended for servers.
