upgraded, the system only needs to be rebooted to load the new kernel and
modules (however there is a feature which makes it possible to switch the
running kernel). Especially if the new kernel has (partly) overwritten the
running one.
Automatic updates are not to be recommended for servers.
You can do automated updes and NOT do the ones that need interaction,
like kernel updates.
