Re: Suse 10 problems - SSH

Back in October I did some module updates to Drupal, but that was it.
(I'm a programmer, not an admin so I was just handling our PHP code
and some of the Drupal stuff. Unfortunately, I'm very ignorant about
the Admin/OS side) I think perhaps the Suse server was set up to do
the automated updates that were classified in a certain way as vital,
but not automated on other things.

If it has been running for that long, most likely it has been running
since the initial installation. I would that not needing much care and
feeding. :-D

It would be a lot easier if you had physical access to the machine :P
(Shut it down, boot the repair system from DVD).

I think one of our people tried this. I'll check with him to see what
happened there.

Just to be sure: is it SUSE 10.0 or SLES or SLED 10? The difference is
not that big, but there might be some differences.

Also, on openSUSE servers I administer, I never use automatic updates
because I really feel that's something I need to watch over.

Good point!

It depends on what the machine is used for. If it is absolutely and
positively never ever going to connect to the internets, then that would
probably not be an issue.

However if there are connections done to/from the internet, then
automated updates should be done, unless you have the knowledge and time
to keep up with security updates and do them yourself.

What you can do is (I am looking at 10.3, so naming can be a bit
different) go to YaST, Software, Automatic Online Update. There you
enable the update and set an hour you desire.

Then _most importantly_ you enable 'skip interactive patches'. Then not
only kernels, but other patches that need something to be done, will get
skipped.
