openSUSE10.3 and Older Intel Video

Just wanting to give my $0.02, and maybe help others out...

Well - last night I took the plunge and decided to try out 10.3 on one
of my home computers that has older hardware. (By older - I mean that
Suse 10.0 found and configured EVERYTHING I have with no problems.)

Anyway - I burned the KDE install CD and told it to perform a new
install. The install process was pleasantly easy, and I couldn't wait
for the first boot...Then - when it came up I was in a horribly
painful 640x480 resolution. (My monitor is older and can handle up to
1024x786 - which is what I had specified in the setup/install
process.)

Upon reading the release notes (in runlevel 3), I noticed a blurb
about there are now 2 drivers for Intel video chipsets. A new "intel"
driver and the older "i810", with "intel" being the default. The
notice also said if the new one didn't work, to switch back to "i810"
by running "sax2 -r".

I tried this, and many other variations, before finally deciding to
hand-edit my xorg.conf, because the driver section would NOT change.
So - in short - I edited one line in my xorg.conf - changing the video
card driver from "intel" to "i810", and then went to runlevel 5.
Beauty!

I really like the 10.3 look and feel, and the software management is
really nice. I must finally give in and say that this version does not
need the SMART package management software which I have become quite
fond of. YaST does it all and does it well with this version.

I am currently downloading all the extra goodies, and will be giving
KDE4 a try later. Overall I am quite impressed so far.
