I'm using SuSE 10.0 with KDE.

Update that!

If it's not broken,
don't fix it.

I've isntalled 10.3 on my laptop. The interface is slower, some things are
nicer. But on the whole... why bother until you need it ?

Do the net a favour and never run a server.

Ouch! What's with the tone? And why would you assume I'd run a server in the
same way?

My home system is sitting behind a hardware firewall and contains only
personal things, of little value. Of which I take dayly backups.

But since you worry, here is how I do things:

1. My home desktop: reasonably recent OS, capable of all the features I need
to program, communicate and generaly mess about. I've used SuSE since 6.2,
switching only when usefull features were added (USB support, DVD writing,
better managment for removeable media, etc...)

2. A server: never use the very last of anything. Let OS's and apps's come
to some maturity first. I *do* keep everything updated with patches, for
which I will gladly pay.

3. My company laptop; supposed to be run with Windows, I double boot it with
a SuSE 10.3 these days. I can play with it, try anything I want. If I don't
like it, or it crashes, or I want to try something else: reformet and
reinstall. Nothing's lost. So faar, I like 10.3, even if the main menu is
_very_ slow to open.

But if it makes you sleep better: my home system will be brought to 10.3 any
day/month/year now... :-)

Thanks for the tip about the shutdown.

you're welcome.

kind regards,
Andreas
.... and to you.
Don't worry, be happy. Have a beer!
