Re: Creating a Recovery Partition

Hello,

I have had this problem for a very long time and I'm sure someone on
this website can help me find a solution.

Basically, I would like to create a recovery partition on my hard
drive. I am aware of how to do this using software such as Norton
Ghost etc. But I would like to create this recovery without using this
kind of software.

Something like how HP, Dell, PC World etc. have theirs set up?

The HP model is the very worst you can emulate. It allows no fixing corrupt
Windows files and overwrites all your data and installed programs. Most
Dells are very sensible and do NOT have a partition but rather give the
owner real disks with real operating systems which WILL allow one to fix
corrupt or missing Windows files. I have no idea about PC World as I
didn't know they make computers.

So if a
virus corrupts the C: drive, and I need to format my drive, I can just
hit the F10 key (or F11 etc.) in bios to access the recovery partition
without using the Ghost disc?

That only works if the virus confines itself to C drive. Many do not and
will infect any partition it can find. Luckily if you are fortunate enough
to have a Linux partition viruses will not affect it.

You do know that some of the stealth viruses can survive a total drive
format don't you? They hide in modem memory or video memory or any other
memory they can find (think printer). Fortunately most viruses are not
that clever as they are simply script kiddie copies.

I hope I have made myself clear, it would be very much appreciated if
someone can help me, thank you.

Kind regards

Why not just back up your Windows partition with something like Mondo/Mindi
if you are worried about viruses? Backing up both Windows and Linux should
be a regular maintenance anyway. But to put everything back to the day you
bought the computer like HP does is plain silly and counter productive,
unless you never added another application/program or saved data from the
time your computer was new.
