Are you sure it freezes?
Try the following:
- Open a new terminal with [ctrl] + [alt] + F6]
- Log in as root
- type 'halt -p'
- you will be switched to the X-session showing the shutdown screen
- switch back to terminal F6
- when the system seems to hang type 'halt -p' again
Does that work? And if so, have you mounted samba shares?
