My guess would be that at the same time you were logging in, and just
after you had entered your password, the time was set forwards several
minutes. This makes the system think you've been idle for xx seconds or
minutes, and so the screen-saver starts up. Since it also exceeds the
second time-out, the system locks the console. Due to this, you then
need to re-enter your password.

Thanks to you and all who have offered CIVIL articulate explanations.
I now understand why the screen saver kicked in after my first boot.
To verify things for myself, I shut down the machine this afternoon for a
half hour and it booted up normally with the clock being slow by about that
amount of time. However, this time it corrected itself within a few seconds
without turning on the screen saver.
