[Resolved] Sound has died. (Suse 10.3)

Despite all the advice from this group, I decided to go for a complete
re-install in a last ditch attempt to get the sound back. So I
downloaded the DVD iso image (I am not going through another "over the
internet" install) which here in Cyprus takes for ever. Went to burn
the image ... mmm what is this large felt washer lying in the tray and
why does my DVD burner no longer recognise inserted media? So
dismantled the DVD drive to find two potential locations that the
washer could've come from so find DVD hardware forum and ask where to
try glueing it back. They had a 50-50 chance of giving me the right
answer and they chose the wrong one, so one new DVD drive later, I
burn the ISO image. Install process finds MD5 error so burn a new one.
Proceed with new install only to find that by keeping my home
directory intact, the previous settings for Kmix appear to have been
helpfully restored. So, backup home directory and blow way entire box
with a third install.
I now have sound back. Current settings of KMix have been *very*
carefully noted. All I've got to do now is reload all the extra bits
and pieces I had installed.
...... sigh
Thanks for all the help though.
