root password issue

it is not recognizing my root password while logged into my user account
when i open yast. but i can log into my root account with no issues with
the same password. i tried changing the password and restarted and logged
out then in and it keeps telling me that the password is incorrect.
i looked for updates for suse and didnt find any.

also, this my be unrelated but i am trying to install a new printer and when
i go the the printer agent in yast it starts going through it's check list
and then disapears every time at the same spot.

I can use all the help i can get, thank you
