I'm (still) an openSUSE and Linux newbie. I had been using YaST to
successfully install any downloaded RPMs, with no problem. Last
night, I downloaded an rpm (bridge-utils, for ethernet bridging) and
when I right-clicked on the file in the gui I selected "install with
YaST".
Okay...it sorted out it's sources and then displays a dialog that says
"ERROR Following packages haven't been found on the medium: bridge-
utils".
I tried for over two hours last night to get this to work. I even set
the directory my downloaded RPM is in as one of the YaST sources --
that didn't work.
I ended up using the rpm command in the shell, and then running
suseconfig. That method doesn't give you a lot of feedback, so I'm
not even sure if it worked. Afterward, I went back into YaST software
management to see if I could search to find the package, and it didn't
show up on the list. Maybe that's because I installed it outside of
YaST (?)
So, something changed in YaST over the last couple of months. It used
to work fine for installing downloaded RPMs. I actually like YaST,
and would prefer to stick with it -- unless the strong recommendation
is to abandon it and use something else. Being a newbie, I worry
about:
a. easy installation, and making sure dependencies are resolved.
b. having something that figures out if new versions or patches are
available.
c. being able to search and see which packages are installed on my
system, and the version information.
Like I said, up until last night YaST was handling this all very
well. Now...???
Thanks,
Randy.
Well, after another four hours last night, here is what the problem
boiled down to. Keep in mind, I'm a Linux (and Unix) newbie.
The package I was trying to install had an extension of ".src.rpm". I
found out that this is a 'source' rpm, not a "ready to install" rpm.
If anyone reading this has anything to do with influencing the design
of YaST's software installer: It would be very nice if the tool said
something like "This is a source package, it is not in a format for
installing yet." (or something like that). I mean, the message I got
-- "Following packages haven't been found on the medium"...WTF is
that? It might as well have said "Too many bytes found to be
wandering". Or, "The computer case LED brightness is out of range".
Give me a freaking break.
I finally got it installed, but man what a waste of time and stress.
