If your clock is slow, you might change the backup battery on the
motherboard.

The backup battery runs the CMOS clock used to keep track of time when
the system is shut down. This clock has a resolution of one second, often
derived from a 32768 Hertz tuning fork, and is ONLY used to "set" the
system clock which is derived from a different clock source (interrupt
driver) of far higher speed (1.8432 MHz is a "popular" timing crystal
frequency) which is routed to the South Bridge component of the
motherboard chipset.

The PC is not turned off, so the battery could not be there, for all I
care.

Might run into difficulties booting because that battery also powers
the non-volatile memory (hardware configuration data) of the CMOS RAM,
but as long as the system is not shut down longer than a few seconds,
this is correct.

On modst PC's the battery is used to generate the clock even when the
PC is on. If the battery is weak the clock will lose time, at least
thats been my experience with bad batteries on my older system.

Many of the systems I'm using don't even have a replaceable battery, or
a place to plug one in. Systems using a Dallas Semiconductor "Real
Time Clock" chip are one example - the chip contains an embedded
lithium energy source (in addition to the CMOS RAM and a 32768 Hertz
tuning fork). The chips should last 7 - 10 years, which is longer than
most people keep their computer.
