Google Earth Install aborts because no display set

I can't figure this one out. X11 System is configured as far I can tell.
(Would I be able to use my PC if not?) But I get this message when I try
to install Google Earth. Not an essential program, but it would be fun to
play with on a rainy day

You don't seem to be running an X server (no DISPLAY set).
Google Earth and its installer both require X11.
