Filtering locally also works. One of the best ones I ever added to my
Leafnode filters is:

^Path: .*googlegroups\.com!not-for-mail

You will find that filtering on 'Message-ID: googlegroups.com' is faster.
When your news reader OR spooler queries the news server for available
articles, the server returns 8 headers:

From:, Subject:, References:, Date:, Bytes:, Lines:, Message-ID: and Xref:

Filtering on other headers requires the reader or spooler to either have
to ask the server for the extra header for every article, or to download
the entire article and then filter it. Either process is substantially
slower than filtering on the information in the eight normal headers. On
two other newsgroups, I have a second rule dealing with google:

References: googlegroups.com\>\$

which gets _replies_ to googlegroups posts (in those two groups, it
seems there are id10ts who respond to google-spam).

The current spam wave is not from google. Someone else set up an open
gateway. I added the spam filter match

^Path: .*news\.hispeed\.ch\.POSTED!not-for-mail

to my newsreader.

Again - 'Message-ID: news.hispeed.ch' works just fine.
