MonitorChanging HELP

SuSE 10.3 was originally set up on a 1024x768 CRT monitor

I now have an HP vp17 LCD monitor
(1) I managed to get the monitor changed in the X-server mode with
Sax2 -r
(2) However, there is no splash screen at startup ( LCD Monitor
complains out of range)
(3) The other TERMINALS (Ctrl-Alt-F2,F3 ....) all send LCD monitor
out of range sign.
(4) If I change Grub's menu.lst vga=normal I will get the listing
of booting processes in very large charactors and the TERMINALS do the
same. It currently reads vga=0x317 in that menu.lst line of the GRUB
file
How do I correct this easily . . . I think the solution may be in
that number of the menu.lst vga=???
The LCD Monitor is 1280 x 1024 in X mode
