Reinstalling Default Configuration

Is there anyway I can 'roll-back' an installation back to its 'out of the
box' defaults? I'm running OpenSuse10.3.
Specifically, I'm doing some C-coding and, everything runs fine then all
of a sudden, various developer libraries and included are no longer
available.
I must add that this is a problem which never occurred when I ran SUSE
10.1
I think what has happened is that as I've downloaded apps from the
OpenSUSE on-line repositories more recent packages have been updated as
dependencies. The main problem are accessing gconf.h and the
libgnomecanvas libraries.
Any suggestions. A quick Google search shows that a few others have
experienced this problem.
