Re: Installing a network printer

I have a Brother HL-1270N printer that I'd like to set up as a network
printer. I had it set up years ago when I had a wired network, but
when I got rid of the other machines on the network, I plugged it into
the back of my desktop machine and it's been like that ever since.

Now, however, The desktop is plugged into a wireless hub (which acts
as a DHCP server, I think) and my wife and I both have laptops that
use the
wireless network to connect to the Web and so on. Anyway, it just
seemed to me to make sense to network the printer again. The only
problem is that I've no idea how to start. I certainly don't remember
the old IP address that printer used to have (and which it presumably
still thinks it has).

Your router probably has a built-in DHCP server which distributes IP
adresses in the network. It will or will not allow communication
between the wired and wireless devices. Check the configuration of the
router for that. It might also tell you the addresses it has already
leased. The one that does not belong to one of the computer is the
printer ;-)
As for the printer: It will most probably accept an IP adress from the
DHCP server. Try nmap on the printer's IP adress to see which ports are
available. Most probably 21 (telnet) 631 (printer) oder 9100 (jet
direct).

I went to the SUSE 'Manage Printing' pages, but just got asked loads
of questions that I have no idea how to answer - like what sort of
device is it (AppSocket/Internet Printing Protocol (http)/Internet
Printing
Protocol (ipp) and some others) and what's the device URI? The answer
to both those questions is, I'm afraid, "Huh?"

It port 631 on the printer is open it will accept jobs via ipp (internet
printing protocol). If port 9100 is available it will accept 'direct'
printing.
