I sometimes use `startx -- :1` and previously this would give me a

So, you're saying it exits your *current* GUI on vc 7? Is there
anything on vc8? If you go to vc7, are there any error msgs?
Try dropping to rl 3 and then do a 'normal' X:
startx
Then go to vc2 and do your
startx -- :1
and then pop back to vc1 and see what msgs were printed when the vc7
GUI died.
Also, What happens if you give it a different window manager:
startx icewm -- :1
(insert window manager of your choice here, just different from the
default)
