So, you're saying it exits your *current* GUI on vc 7? Is there
anything on vc8? If you go to vc7, are there any error msgs?

Try dropping to rl 3 and then do a 'normal' X:

startx

Then go to vc2 and do your

startx -- :1

and then pop back to vc1 and see what msgs were printed when the vc7
GUI died.

Also, What happens if you give it a different window manager:

startx icewm -- :1

(insert window manager of your choice here, just different from the
default)
