Re: apt-get in Suse?

Folks,

I am use to Debian and Ubuntu. I've just downloaded and installed Suse.
Is there something similar to "apt-get" in Suse? I also read something
about "Yast". Is that the program you use to install applications in
Suse?

Yes, there is smart, which is the repplacement for apt-get on openSUSE.
However there is much more choice.

If so, do you have to download the applications first before installing
them? Or does it go out and get the application to install?

Sorry about asking these sort of newbie questions. Thank you for your
help.

The best way is to look at YaST first. Have you seen the installer? That
was YaST. Start up YaST and look around. The first you might want to do
is go in Software, Software Reporsitories, Add, Select Community
Repositories and add Packman and perhaps VideoLan as well.

Now installing software can be done in several ways. First you can
search in YaST, Software, Software Management what you want. Next you
can search on http://software.opensuse.org/search or on
http://packages.opensuse-community.org/ and install with the 1-click
install. This on the GUI side.

On the CLI side, you can still run YaST. There is more, much more. The
main tool is zypper. Read `man zypper` for more information. zypper can
be used to add repo's, install and remove programs and do much more.

Basicaly the things in YaST are a frontend for it, just like for many
other things.

I already mentioned the 1-click install. This can also be used under CLI
since 11.0 with OCICLI (One Click Install CLI) So as root the following
will let you install MPlayer: `OCICLI http://tinyurl.com/3ozf4s`

First it will add the MPlayer repository, then it will install the
software. If it needs it, it will add other repositiories as well.

So instead of having just one tool, there are many and the user has the
choice of what he or she likes.

Now this BuildService you see a lot of repo's is
https://build.opensuse.org/ and is used to actualy build all the
software. Not only the things that openSUSE uses, but also what many
other people build. Standard a search om
http://software.opensuse.org/search will give those projects as well.

Check out http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org
http://en.opensuse.org/Yast
http://en.opensuse.org/Zypper
http://en.opensuse.org/One_Click_Install

And seriously, look at YaST. Many things can (not must) be done there.

In my opinion if you have bugs down there that are so bad
you need to use a pesticide, you're not gonna get laid anyway.
