One could argue that blocking content is not part of the default
browsing and thus should not be part of the browser.
I wouldn't agree. In Opera I can enable or disable the downloading of images with a single click. That is definitely a function of the browser, but it's exactly the same as ad-blocking - choosing not to download certain additional files referenced by the html page.
(As an aside, webmasters who complain about people blocking ads can kiss my butt. It's my computer, and when I choose to download a html file I have the right to choose whether or not to download any additional files like media or ads. To force me to download ads - or run scripts just to see textual content - is to take control away from me. Unobtrusive ads (text only) are not worth blocking, but disabling Javascript usually eliminates them anyway.)
Incidentally I can also enable/disable Javascript with a single click, because you can customise the toolbar to include tickboxes for preferences. I keep Java, JS and plugins off and enable each with a single click when required. This is a hassle in Firefox.
Yes, I use it and many people do, but that only means it could be added
as a default plugin.
So in other words not provided by a third party like Adblock is.
Really you are asking for a modular browser with the ability to not load modules you don't use. That's a good idea actually. I never use Opera mail (I use Kmail) or Opera's torrent client (I use Ktorrent.)
I have a problem with the idea of requiring *third party* plugins to provide functionality required by many users.
Yes I know there are other ways of blocking ads but using the browser
to do it is the easiest.
That might be and could indeed be a reason for you to use something. I
rather have it as a plugin and have as much as a plugin as possible.
(Not the same as 'as much plugins as possible')
well, I meant altering the hosts file or blocking hosts at the router.
