Re: install problems with Suse 11.0

Sound like you need to set the correct Framebuffer module. Grub being a
DOS or real-mode program use the standard DOS vesa commands for your
graphic card. But in the protected mode the vesa fb commands are not
standardize, and sometime they must be emulated. So, Linux sometime has
a hard time choosing which FB module to load. And when fb module is
active for the first time Linux may choose a safe "VGA" or even "CGA"
mode.

So, to change this: you have two options.

First, try the "sax2" command. This program can alter the video and
has a testing mode to check if the mode can be set.

or second, set the video up manually by

1. Boot system in "Text Mode"

2. Find the name of the correct of your FB for your graphic card.

3. Load module by using the "modprobe <fb>", and replacing
the "<fb>" which the correct module name.

4. Check for a file "/etc/fb.modes" and see what modes you can use.

5. Try "fbset -v " to set what the current values are.

6. Then "fbset --test -v mode" mode name will be in quote from
the mode list in step 4.

7. If FBset command reports no error, alter the Grub load parameter
to load module and set fb mode you want from set 6. Or better
yet (a safety factor) add another grub entry with the updated load
parameter, until you find out this mode work corectly.

Then reboot and you should have the graphica mode that you want.

Hi there,

I am having some problems installing Suse 11.0 32-bit on a pc which
currently runs 10.3.
The problem is that the graphic mode is not properly supported, either
by my video card (nvidia riva tnt) or by Suse.
When I start the dvd the grub bootloader screen comes up OK, but
whatever install option I choose, I end up in a unusable install screen:
1. In graphical mode (in any resolution from 640x480 to whatever higher)
I end up in a lot of green squares, or some rubbish on the screen,
typically in EGA-mode resolution (looks familiar as a first time pc-user);
2. In text mode I end up in the screen being addressed in a very low
resolution (again something like EGA), where half of the information
falls of the screen, making any navigation impossible.

Does anybody have a clue how to solve this (beside replacing the video
card)?
