Re: Windows BSOD at olympics

Lee,

Here is a really funny story about Window's BSOD.

Blue Screen of Death Strikes Bird's Nest During Opening Ceremonies Torch Lighting

Well, this is just perfect. At the exact moment Li Ning was rounding the lip of the Bird's Nest during the amazing torch-lighting climax, someone snapped this photo of our good friend the BSOD nestled among the Nest's steel twigs. Perhaps an Opening Ceremonies IT dude spit out his coffee on the machines in the server room when Li took to the sky? Another question is what a projection screen is doing inside the Nest at that location, but I think the better question is what wasn't going on inside the Nest's roof—did you see that thing during the ceremonies? Lights! Fireworks! LED screens! Everything! Anyway, if only one image of this perfectness existed we'd be skeptical, but thankfully, someone has grabbed more from a different angle that pretty much seal the deal.

UPDATE: And it's been confirmed on the NBC broadcast by commenter cirby on his DVR.

Ouch! More super-zoomed images for error message decoding here:

Very cool. It took a trained geek to notice this among all of the awesomeness that was the opening ceremony. That's dedication.

I sure hope not... Getting fired in China carries a whole different meaning.

@warxsnake: I think it was probably a projection of the field and the simulcast, as people in those seats probably couldn't see the best in terms of individual people.

Like those tvs they have at stadiums broadcasting the games parallel to the game going on.

Re: Location - if you noticed that many of the projected images weren't in "fixed" locations, it leads me to believe they all had automated (or, gasp, manual) positioning systems and someone decided that the ceiling was a better place for the BSOD than the middle of the performance.

Just a thought?

@warxsnake: if you look at the images you can see that it appears to be on the underside or back of the lip that goes around the stadium, which means it wouldn't have been picked up when the camera was following the torch lighter. as you can see in the first picture, the photographer is shooting from beheath the guy, so the image is on the underside of the roof.

For the sake of the Chinese crews running the performance I hope this is a fake. Some of the Chinese governments reputation for intensity towards failure is made-up, but having lived in China for several years I can tell you that the Olympics are absolutely the biggest priority in the country. If this was a computer mess-up there is no question in my mind the entire team that handled it was fired and probably reassigned to the most humiliating job that could be found. No joke.

I do freelance AV stuff and if this *is* real, it was only up there for a split second. Every show computer has a backup and for something like the Olympics I wouldn't be surprised if each show computer had an operator. The operator's job in a situation like this is to hit the button to switch to the backup, then reboot and get the show computer up and running.

show computer = computer running the powerpoint/video/whatever

I was there, almost at the same spot underneath from where the picture was allegedly taken, staring up the torch holders ass the whole time, and i didnt see any BSOD.
So i call fakes, plus the fact that there are many pictures resembling this one on the net, i guess someone grabbed it modified and posted, since it took a while thats why it wasnt up the very next hour

Guys, although it looks like a legit picture, let's get some facts before making any assumptions.

The "lights and video" part of the show, was controlled by a huge networked system with redundancy all the way. They had 3 full-size lighting consoles, with another 3 as backup. They also utilized 110 media servers -connected to some Christie Roadster projectors- with redundant equipment and failover measures. Sure, technology tends to fail, and in the most unexpected and unfortunate conditions, and sure, Windows fails. But if it really failed, it must lasted just a few seconds, until an emergency system took over.

I'd say it's real, but fake. Probably some Apple or *Nix fanboi sitting below that section with a pico projector.

(j/k) But it does point out how much fun the near future will be. Imagine a substantial amount of projectors embedded in PMP's and phones. And now your stuck in a darkened auditorium watching and listening to CEO's dreck on the stage. And across the ceiling of where you're sitting, dozens of projected screens of people playing games, someone photochopping an image of the CEO, someone showing off their pr0n collection. Mass anarchy.

If its fake, someone took a lot of time to do the shadows of the rigging that the projection is going over. I say real, you cant expect that much technology to all run 100%, even if it was a $300 million production.

I would love to say it's fake...

But you can't fake the text's distortion very accurately as it's projected on the black rigging.

The only thing that was truly sketchy was the mismatched blurs from either shaky picture taking, focus, or someone trying to fake a focus shot.

CONFIRMED: I found it on my HD DVR recording of the Opening Ceremonies. Angle and color are correct. It's a blue-white smudge on the ceiling at about 4 hours and 24 minutes into the NBC broadcast version. Right after the torch lighting, they have a shot with some women in red dresses, holding flags. It's right above the white flag.

If you saw the ceremonies live and didn't notice it, it's because some tech switched to the backup in less than a second.

its legit.. for all of you saying its fake because of the angles.. ever heard of keystone??
its alters the projection to make it appear as though the image is being projected from front on when it could be projected from an angle as much as 45 degrees...
as far as it being an english version of windows.. do you really think the chinese put that show on all by themselves?? i mean it would have been mostly done by them but alot of that lighting and production gear would have been sub-hired from other countries.. even though the lighting designer (who is responsible for the synchonisation of lighting and video) and 99% of the workers were chinese, a company called Advanced Communtication equipment was responsible for the technical realisation and automated controll of the show.. doesnt sound very chinese does it??
conclusion??
windows crashed! (im a mac person so this makes my day)haha and this isnt fake in my books.. someone prove me wrong and i will happily stand corrected..
