Re: Asus P5 series mobo:s and integrated nic

This fantastic thing has a feature they call Express Gateway.

This feature is actually a Linux installation in the south bridge.
It can connect to the Internet before the OS even boots.
It has Email and browser and stuff. So that in seconds you can be online
surfing and mailing without having to actually boot the thing.

I have no use for this but since it's a Linux built in, one would expect
the onboard gigabit capable network interface to work like charm? _No_

My guess is that it is still a too new board. Open a bugreport and it
could be OK in 11.1

The driver for this nic needs to have a module made and installed into the
kernel. I've done the VMWare modules many times, this might be just as
easy?

I never done it, but I would say yes.

Other than that the board is great.
At least compared with what I've had so far.

So what is different with the board? How do you know it is the board and
not e.g the processor or memory?

I am thinking of buying a new PC as well. Probably based on the Phenom
X4 9950 and I have still no idea what motherboard to pick. Also not sure
if I go for 4GB or 8GB memory. And also no idea if I should go with 2 x
1TB, 4 x 500GB or 3 x 650GB

And then there is the case. Should I go with the cheapest where I have
enough room, or is a more expensive one better?

Also I will probably go for water cooling for the 2 videocards (for 3
screens) and the bridges. So much choice and I do not want to spend
money on things I don't need and on the other hand not needing to buy
something next year, because I was too cheap.

To get back a bit on topic how is overclicking on Linux, or is
everything done in the bios (I never overclocked anything)

OTOH my 32 bit 3GHz 1GB with a total of about 350GB HD still works and I
have not too many problems, so it is more a luxery problem I have.
