For one thing it takes DDR2 in four slots. That's 16 GB. I now have 8.
DDR2 instead of DDR3 because of current availability/price.
I have only once updated memory. That was from 4MB to 8MB so I could run
Win95. :-D After that for each new mobo, the technolagy was so much
changed I just had to buy new anyway and actualy never have had not
enough.
Now I seem to have enough for a while. I think the amount and speed of
memory is not such a big problem as a non gamer.
DDR2 is so much cheaper than DD3 that went for it. Without really knowing
how DDR3 would help me more.
That's also why I filled the banks with 2 GB sticks, too. They fours are
expensive. I couldn't wait.
I wanted so badly to get the new computa running.
To me it is basicaly the CPU that sometimes could be a bit more and the
fact that I want one more monitor attached.
Take a PSU with enough connections, preferably modular so you put in
only the cables you need and add when needed. You'' have more freedom in
choosing/mixing disks later.
Also good if silent.
Mine is Corsair HX 520 W. Very silent.
I am thinking about 650W thermaltake, although I might reconsider when
I use http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp and see
what I actually need.
I know :) I was thinking of 750 w or something.
I chose mine because everybody said it's silent and stable.
It also has a 5 year warranty and they say they use better industrial
(or something) class capacitors. I know them bitches are important to
have long lifetime.
Another one much recommended was Seasonic.
The proc I have is Intel Quad 6600.
I thought it was most for the money.
It runs 2.4 GHz stock but also runs 3.8 GHz from BIOS.
Easily 3 GHz on air. More than I need.
Nice to know. It is a bitch to copare AMD and Intell/
Check this:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
Still, I never thought that I would need the ultimate horsepower.
I think it's important to run cool > less cooling > less noise.
Mine idles over 90 % of the time.
And I can't hear the stock cooler's noise :)
Anyway, I need computers just as bad as a boat or motorcycle: For nothing.
Same here, so I try to resist the urge as much as possible to buy a new
one.
And then there is the case. Should I go with the cheapest where I have
enough room, or is a more expensive one better?
I took a silent one. It makes a diffence.
There are others but this was 60 euros, Nexus Caterpillar.
And silent to me.
That is cheap. <checks it> OK, midi tower. I will have not enough room
in such a case, especialy if I go watercooling that I would like to have
inside the case.
If mine would need liquid today, I would probably go here:
http://www.northq.com/products/coolers/nq3580.html
Also I will probably go for water cooling for the 2 videocards (for 3
screens) and the bridges. So much choice and I do not want to spend
money on things I don't need and on the other hand not needing to buy
something next year, because I was too cheap.
There also I went silent. Passive graphics (no games)
HD video is just fine.
Even there I am not completely sure how I should go. Either 2 dualheads
or 3 singleheads, but the latter will most likely be a much more
expensive motherboard that then might miss some PCI ability from cards I
do not directly want to loose.
To get back a bit on topic how is overclicking on Linux, or is
everything done in the bios (I never overclocked anything)
My proc and board just BIOS settings are enough to bring this to 3.8 GHz.
OK. But then it will depend on the motherboard and thus price. When I
look a new PC will be anywhere between 1.000 and 6.000 EUR, although my
budget is more like just under 1.000 EUR. That is without the
watercooling.
It could even be that I first buy the watercooling and do some
overclocking and then buy a new machine in january or so.
OTOH my 32 bit 3GHz 1GB with a total of about 350GB HD still works and I
have not too many problems, so it is more a luxery problem I have.
I hear you. I kept saying that to myself like a year or so.
Then I wanted HD video. That was the thing I couldn't do with the old
one. (or several virtual machines simultaneously)
I sereously do not need any more space so perhaps I just go for 2x500GB.
I can then always add some 1TB or then 2TB HD's, but somehow I would
like to go for 3 HD's, but I do not know why.
500 GB of mammalian protuberances is reasonable :)
