Hi,

I have a question pertaining to an OS upgrade: I have openSuSE 10.2
installed on a rahter old desktop PC with only 512 MB RAM and an
Athlon XP 2000 or so, running KDE 3.5.x.

I have the same processor, with 1GB memory at home and at work with 2GB
of memory. If you can add another 512MB stick of memory it should be
fine. 512MB would probably work, but the more memory you have, the
better.

For some reasons I would like
to upgrade, and now I am unsure whether to use a system upgrade or to
change the OS and install Xubuntu instead ... Can someone tell me: If
I simply choose system upgrade (after 11.1 is out), will it be
possible to use KDE 3.5.10 or will KDE 4 be installed? I doubt that
KDE 4 will run properly on this machine.

Well, as many here will tell you, it's better to do a clean install
especially when making that big of a jump (10.2 to 11.1). Back up
your /home directory (I make sure I have any complicated config files
copied to my /home dir as well for easy reference in the new system)
and then do a clean install.

I believe they will have KDE 3.5.10 available, but you can check on
openSUSE's site. So far, it appears so:

http://en.opensuse.org/Product_Highlights/11.1

I've had KDE 4.0.x running on this box, and the one at work without any
real speed issues compared to KDE 3. I played with it a bit and think it
has possibilities but I was not yet ready to switch. I still prefer
lighter weight desktops . . .

What else could I do before
or after an upgrade to ensure the highest possible speed?

Memory, memory, memory. The difference between 1GB and 2GB is *very*
noticeable in my case.
