openSUSE 11.1, nvidia 9600 KO - resolution problems....again!

Greetings,
I'm still stumbling with getting my display resolutions properly set up.
I've been struggling with this for years with many versions of SUSE and
11.1 is no different. MD5Sums were validated and the media was checked
and deemed problem free.
Installed 11.1 32 bit edition. I have an Acer AL2216W monitor and an
EVGA 9600 KO video card.
Installation of openSUSE seemed to go fine. I used yast2 to install the
nvidia drivers correct for kernel- pae. Still no problems. I went into
yast2-->hardware-->Graphics Card and Monitor Properties and it
recognizes the video card. I go to change and select LCD 1680 x 1050@60
Hz as that is the recommended setting for my monitor. I include the
horizontal size of 473 mm and vertical of 296 mm and the Hsync range of
30 kHz - 82 kHz and Vsync of 56 Hz - 76 Hz. Test of sax2 doesn't come up
with this but with 1400 x 1050 @ 50. I tried to manually edit my
xorg.conf file and add modelines but var/log says that the mode lines
aren't correct for CRT-1 on GPU(1). Well, it ain't a CRT.
Tried nvidia-settings as root. Still with the CRT-1. I have an .inf file
for the monitor but can't figure out a way to get the data into
openSUSE. It isn't on a disk but a file I downloaded. I burnt it to a
disk (K3B hadn't automagically configured my Pioneer DVD/RW and I had to
add it - now one on me!) it crashed Sax2 when I told it I had a utility
disk. And the /var/log also states that it can't read the EDID read for
display CRT-1 as it is invalid. Then it tries to load the modelines and
can't. First validated modeline is 1400 x 1050.
I've run sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia.
I tried copying the xorg.conf file from a machine hooked to the
identical model monitor, another 9600 nvidia card, running openSUSE
11.0 and that didn't work.
I had emailed myself with the xorg.conf file attached from this very
machine running 11.0. Resolution looked fine but the keyboard and mouse
wouldn't work. I had to reinstall after trying to get knoppix to restore
the back up copy I had made of xorg.conf before monkeying with it but
knoppix didn't recognize any hard drives (that was a new one on me but I
just reinstalled openSUSE).
I've had problems with my nvidia drive and the pae kernel in the past so
I deleted the pae kernel and loaded the default kernel. Then I loaded
the defualt nvidia drivers too. Still can't get the resolution to the
proper 1680 x 1050 @ 60
These are my frustrations. (And it is probably because I don't know what
the h3ll I'm doing). But I
loved how the partitioner picked up the old partitions, left my home
partition alone, imported my mount points and even easily retained my
LVM raid set up. Very cool . If I could just get my display to function.....
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Tom
