Hi,

the upgrade from 11.0 to 11.1 went well on my Asus P22 but X would not
start. It worked in 11.0 and it took me a day of trial-and-error to
find a solution.

The error was similar to this:

(II) intel(0): Output VGA disconnected
(II) intel(0): Output TMDS-2 disconnected
(WW) intel(0): No outputs definitely connected, trying again...
(II) intel(0): Output VGA disconnected
(II) intel(0): Output TMDS-2 disconnected
(WW) intel(0): Unable to find initial modes
(EE) intel(0): No valid modes.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

The P22 only has one DVI connector and I guess, even though
it is a desktop computer, that the mainboard is actually one of a
laptop computer.

Anyway, the solution was to add

Option "ForceSDVODetect" "on"

to the device section in xorg.conf. The screen flashes funny
colors at startup but, at least, it works :-)

Looks like the movie industry hit you with their "force all new hardware to
prevent any kind of analog output" crap. More than likely, if you put
Vista on that machine, you would be forced to use a digital display.
