I've upgraded to 11.1 using a clean install and now I find that sound
playback in both Amarok (mp3's) and Kaffeine (DVD and .avi) are both
damaged. I get sound but it's very choppy, the playback skips and seems
to be
playing tracks
too quickly and sometimes just stops. I've tried with both the xine
and yuap engines.
I've been through the multimedia package with Yast to ensure that
wherever possible
the rpms have been downloaded from Packman. Any suggestions as to what
to try next
would be gratefully received.

I am not sure if it helps but have you tried the "1 click install" for
the restricted multimedia formats?

you can find it here:
http://opensuse-community.org/Multimedia#openSUSE_11.1.2C_11.0_or_10.3

After going there and selecting everything, Kaffeen plays ogg, which it
probably did before that, I just didn't test it. It will not play mp3,
avi, flv (why would flash video's be prevented when they play in Firefox
with no changes or additions?). I haven't tried others yet.

I'll have to keep my 11.0 system around just to play these things.
The play there was enabled by the same method, so there must be some
conflict between 11.1 and ?

If there was some kind of patent like legalities on food, air, or water
there would be no life on Earth!

I solved my 11.1 problem of using Kaffeine by adding a codec lib with DVD as
part of the description (don't remember which one). Obviously not
triggered to add it when following the link above, though it is getting
most of them.
