I'm in the process of updating a home/office LAN to gigabit using D-LinkI don't think you'll need to do anything except change the interfaces to
switch and PCI cards. The LAN is mixed Vista :- ( , XP and Linux.
My main Linux box runs SUSE 10.02 (is on the original Fast Ethernet LAN
already with on board ethernet) and I have a spare D-Link DGE-528T
Gigabit card I would like to use in it.
use the D-Link DGE-528T, ie, use eth1 instead of eth0. The ethernet
card is a low-level device that should negotiate on it's own with other
low-level devices (physical ports and cables). D-Link should provide a
Linux driver if one is necessary. I've gone from 10 - 100 - 1000bps and
never had to compile a kernel or driver for an NIC.
As long as your D-Link switch negotiates at 1gigabit and all devices
negotiate at 1gigabit then you should have your 1gigabit throughput.
Not sure if the D-Link lowers all ports to the slowest speed or
negotiates each individual port independently. Ie, if you connect a
100bps modem port will the rest of the switch ports connect at 1gigabit?
The manual - as far as it goes - says it will run ports at whatever speed is available without bringing others down - and so far it seems to be doing that.
Thanks again
