Could this be a zero-length partition?

My KDE desktop crashed. This has happened once before, quite some time
ago.

That time I just went to init 3 and then back and everything was fine.

That time there were no further problems.

This time a disk in my system disappeared.

I ran fsck and e2fsck, with same result:

e2fsck: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read
while trying to open /dev/sdb1
Could this be a zero-length partition?

It's like gone in the air.
What could I try next?
Or is this drive gone for good?

The drive is a SATA Barracuda, not very old.

There's been no indication of a failure before this.
