That's true. I *believe* the OP was asking about the desktop's ability
to associate files, much like Windows' associating file extensions to
certain programs.
Also, programs like Firefox that have their own associations will
override the desktop's preferences -- if they even _check_ the
desktop's preferences.
Or am I wrong here? I only use file assosciation in mc and firefox and
those programs are neither KDE nor GNOME.
No, you are not wrong; those programs contain their own methods/lists
of associations. And I don't even know if all the desktop managers have
their own -- I only know that KDE *does* have this association.
I used to use icewm about 95% of the time and, being a window manager,
the idea of file associations didn't fit and was not implemented; same
with other window managers. To be truly useful, a file association
system would be available regardless of dm/wm being used -- maybe setup
something like the mime.types file in Apache . . . :-)
