This shows how to install a complete distro on a USB stick, but the principal to get it to boot GRUB is the same.
I use a floppy with GRUB on it, rather than grub-install. This is similar to the method shown above. On install, grubs needs root (hdn,m), set to where it can find the rest of GRUB. Otherwise, the BIOS thinks there is no operating system. If GRUB finds itself, but the menu.lst is incorrect, it will give its own error message.
