KMix muting

Generally after a reboot I have to right click on the speaker in the taskbar
and remove the check mark on Mute. It has also muted itself randomly (or
at least not in any recognizable pattern).

The system is 11.1 with KDE 3.5 and some Gnome functions, and is also a dual
boot with Win XP. The reboot is generally after I have to run something in
Win (which wine, Xen, and VirtualBox will not run properly - the program
needs to communicate with a hardware box - which works when dual-booted to
Win XP).

I'm trying VMWare in another box to check it, but I still have the problem
of sound being turned off. Could XP be disabling the sound card?
