Remote X-Windowing OpenSuse 11.1

Hi
I'm experimenting with using an old laptop to provide remote access to my
main server box to run X-Windows applications over a wireless connection.
I've managed to get things working using ssh -Y but it is diabolically slow.
Admittedly neither the laptop or Tower(server) are what you might call up-to
date systems, but I would've hoped to have had a usable system. I'm working
over my internal network - no outside access required - so is there a way of
getting this to work without ssh so I can determine if I'm suffering from
ssh overhead or just p1ssing in the wind with my current hardware.
Regards
.
