my DVD player/burner used to work perfectly...but, it now routinely
will not boot from the Linux Format Magazine DVD i used to install
openSUSE 10.3, nor the last several sent by that magazine....nor from
old Red Hat disks..

well, it will boot any of those about one or two out of ten tries..

therefore, i suspect my DVD reader, and since you have proven your
disk's ability on another machine, yours also..
