I added my local user mail account to thunderbird. (yes you can do that :))

It works fine when I manually check for new mail by pressing the get mail
button. But it doesn't auto check at the periodic intervals I have set.

any ideas?

Go to Account->View Settings->Server Settings and tick the relative
boxes for checking the service.
