Re: Opensuse 12 and VNC?

Can it be done on Opensuse?
A typical remote X login won't work, because that particular desktop
won't be available when I sit at the actual machine.

Xvnc creates a new "desktop in in a window" which then can be manipulated by
use of any VNC client, locally or remotely. You can make it ignore terminate
signals so it lives by even if the X11 user session it was started in was
long gone. This tool is even useable without any local display or X11
session at all, making it possible to create a VNC terminal server
presenting multiple sessions.

To achieve what you are trying to do with this tool, the local session has
to be contained in a fullscreen Xvnc. The benefit is you don't need a local
display. The bad thing is Xvnc don't support hardware acceleration, and is
used always - at least you have to know in advance before starting the
desktop session, which is a real showstopper nowadays.

x11vnc in contrary exports the current desktop and relies on it. As soon as
x11vnc is started, the current desktop can be controlled remotely by a VNC
client. Sure, if the current desktop does not exist anymore (local session
terminated), the client connection is gone, too. So you have to leave it
open (locked if you wish). Shouldn't be a big problem though, as e.g.
OpenSuSE offers a local user to open a secondary session when the first one
is locked.

However, there is a drawback, too. Acceleration is limited to the first
session, so the secondary local user cannot use that feature. But it's not
that bad as having no accelaration at all.

Kind regards
