Any progress on Kmail since it went MDIR?

Greetings:

Since Kmail changed to MDIR format last year and no conversion tool worked
to transfer my old MBOX Kmail, I was wondering if anyone knows if things had
progressed since last year or so. It was acknowledged at the time on a Kmail
site that the importer application was buggy--or didn't work--can't remember
exactly, but I got nowhere with it.
Love the idea of MDIR over MBOX, as it seems less corruptable, so if anyone
can tell me how to import my old mail, I would appreciate it.

Or can someone recommend a good MDIR email program that's pretty
bulletproof?

Though certainly not a majority view, I espouse the one that considers that vital apps like mail, browsing, printing, sound & such should be autonomous standalone static packages that bring all their own rags while depending on nothing else and cannot be prevented from working if needed once the OS got booted. ...
